The Royal North of Ireland YC at Cultra on Belfast Lough had quite a month of it in August with the hosting of the hundred-strong fleet racing in the GP14 Worlds. And then, in the very last weekend of the month, ex-pat member Peter McConnell skippered the J/109 Karaboudjan, which he co-owns with Aaron Goodman-Simpson, to a very clear victory in the four day J/109 British Championship which was incorporated in Dartmouth Royal Regatta in Devon.
Karaboudjan was interacting with the Irish fleet last year at the Sovereign’s in Kinsale, and came fourth in class. But although Tom Shanahan’s former Irish champion Ruth (National YC) was racing at Dartmouth, the Irish challenger had to be content with seventh overall in a feet of 14 t Dartmouth while McConnell’s discard was a third in a scoreline including four firsts, whle his strongly Irish crew lineup included Nick Meadow, Rory Comerford and Conor Galligan.
