Fairlie Yacht Club's Pete Wright Wins Surprise Impact Award

10th September 2025
“Pete,
Pete Wright surprises receiving the RYA Scotland Impact Award at the 2025 Largs Regatta Festival, with Ruaridh Wright by his side

Fairlie Yacht Club volunteer Pete Wright received a surprise RYA Scotland Impact Award at the 2025 Largs Regatta Festival. The presentation took place during the 'Cumbraes Weekend' prizegiving ceremony, where Pete has long served as Race Officer.

The award was presented by Fairlie Sailing Club Commodore Calum McPhee, accompanied by Pete's son, professional sailor Ruaridh Wright. Ruaridh's presence added an emotional touch to the event, as it was kept a secret until the moment of the award.

“I had no idea – absolutely no idea,” Pete said after receiving the award. “I’m absolutely blown away,” he added about Ruaridh's surprise appearance.

Ruaridh highlighted the importance of volunteers, stating, “You can’t race without a race officer. It’s important to have people like Dad who give up their time and energy.”

Pete Wright is known for his dedication and leadership, having shaped many regattas along the Clyde. Fellow sailors describe him as “a friend to everyone in the fleet.”

The Impact Award acknowledges Pete’s significant contributions to Scottish sailing, leaving a lasting mark on the community.
