A 64 metre superyacht has berthed recently in Cork’s Kinsale marina.
The vessel named Scout was designed by Jonny Horsfield’s H2 Yacht Design.
Horsfield, who graduated from Coventry University after studying car design, established his yacht design company in 1994.
As Carroll O’Donoghue of Subsea Survey Services (www.subseasurvey.ie) notes, the vessel was completed in 2019 at the Royal Hakvoort Shipyard in the Netherlands on the site of a shipyard that dates back to 1780.
“In mathematical speak, Scout is 64m long, beam 12m, has a top speed of 15kts, weighs 1700 grt, has a crew of 21 and room for 10 guests,”O’Donoghue says.
“By any other measure Scout is pure luxury, stabilized and silent. Perhaps not understated, but that is hardly the point,”O’Donoghue says.
The steel hulled vessel with an aluminium superstructure sails under the Cayman Islands flag.
O’Donoghue notes it is the second most popular flag state for superyachts with a total of 1402 yachts registered.
He says that Scout was originally built for the Heineken family, and was subsequently bought by businessman and philanthropist James Berwind of the Berwind Corporation coal-mining dynasty of Philadelphia.
Berwind named the vessel after one of his beloved dogs, and a large gold replica of the animal stands on Scout’s forepeak, O’Donoghue says.
“Since his first arrival in Kinsale, James bought a home near the town so hopefully both Scout and James will be part of this wonderful port,”O’Donoghue adds.
