The International Maxi Association has launched its 2026 season with new leadership and an expanded board. At its AGM in Porto Cervo, Maurits van Oranje-Nassau was elected President, succeeding Benoît de Froidmont.

The IMA is recognised by World Sailing as the governing body for maxi yacht racing globally.

Van Oranje-Nassau said the role carries responsibility. “It is an honour to take up the position of President of this prestigious organisation,” he said. He added that recent updates to the association’s bylaws aim to strengthen future governance.

New board members include Peter Dubens, Giovanni Lombardi Stronati and Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones.

Secretary General Andrew McIrvine said the fleet remains strong. “It is very good to see how healthy the maxi fleet is despite an overall fall in yacht racing,” he said. He also highlighted new initiatives to encourage youth and female participation.

Major Events Ahead in 2026

The season continues with a full Mediterranean calendar following early Caribbean racing. Key events include the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, both expected to attract large fleets.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will again host the Rolex IMA World Championships for Maxi 1 and Maxi Grand Prix classes. Other fixtures include the IMA Maxi European Championship in Naples and the Loro Piana Giraglia offshore race.

Mediterranean Challenges Continue

The IMA will again run its inshore and offshore Mediterranean challenges. These series reward consistency across multiple events, with cumulative scoring favouring teams competing regularly.

The offshore challenge began with the Rolex Middle Sea Race and concludes in August. Organisers said the structure is designed to encourage participation across the full season.

The association also confirmed continued support from long-term partner Rolex.
