Ferrari Hypersail Partners With ABB on 800V DC Power System

ABB has joined Ferrari Hypersail as its Electrification Partner, bringing its Direct Current (DC) and marine power expertise to the development of Ferrari’s 100-foot oceanic full-foiling monohull yacht.

Ferrari Hypersail is powered by renewable energy and is designed to combine speed, resilience and safety with onboard energy generation and management.

48V and 800V DC Systems

The yacht's DC architecture will operate at 48V and 800 VDC, generating, storing and managing power for navigation, foil controls, safety systems and propulsion.

ABB has more than 25 years of experience in DC technology and a portfolio of more than 700 patents in the field. It will support Ferrari Hypersail with expertise in energy management, marine electrical systems and energy storage.

ABB's team will also provide expertise in DC system integration, intelligent power distribution and resilience at sea.

Testing DC Technology at Sea

ABB says Ferrari Hypersail provides a high-performance environment to demonstrate advanced electrification, DC architectures, and intelligent energy management under extreme offshore conditions.

“Ferrari Hypersail gives ABB a unique platform to demonstrate how we are collaborating with partners to push the limits of Direct Current technology,” said Giampiero Frisio, President of ABB’s Electrification business area.

“Ferrari Hypersail is designed to operate in conditions that are as demanding as anything our systems face in industry.”

ABB says lessons from the project could help advance resilient and efficient power systems in sectors including marine, renewables, data centres and industrial microgrids.

Renewable Energy at Sea

Ferrari Hypersail Project Leader Enrico Voltolini said electrical self-sufficiency is central to the project.

“Hypersail runs entirely on renewable energy,” Voltolini said. “It has to be self-sufficient for weeks at a time in the most hostile ocean environments on earth. Having ABB's electrification expertise connected to the project is a valuable operational advantage.”

ABB says insights from the project will help inform the development of advanced power systems for industries including shipping, data centres and renewable energy infrastructure.
