At the same time Cork Harbour is to host and celebrate the 'European Maritime Days to Play' event, fans of tall ships are in for a treat this week with a visiting vessel from Spain.
The reproduction Spanish 17th-century galleon is the Galeón Andalucía, which is to head upriver of the Lee to berth at the city’s Custom House Quay as part of the Cork Harbour Festival. For further details of ship tours, dates, times, and prices, click on the website.
Visitors will be welcomed aboard the replica tall ship along with the European Maritime Days event's lineup of four ship tours (all-free) on (Saturday, 24 May), as Afloat previously reported, which will follow the city’s first hosting of a major EU European Maritime Day conference.
Galeón Andalucía is a 160-foot-long, full-sized replica built in 2009 at the Punta Umbria shipyard in Huelva. Such armed merchant vessels were constructed in Spain and Portugal between the 16th and 18th centuries.
The replica galleon boasts six decks and sets seven sails, and Cork will be the first port of call on its inaugural visit to Ireland.
