The Dutch schooner Noorderlicht anchored on the south side of Dublin Bay on Saturday afternoon.

The tall ship sought shelter in the lee of Dun Laoghaire Harbour amid strong north-westerly winds blowing across the bay.

Marine tracking showed the vessel arriving shortly after midday. It remained at anchor as conditions continued to strengthen offshore.

Noorderlicht is more than 100 years old. Launched in Germany as the lightvessel Kalkgrund II, she originally served in the Baltic Sea before being retired and later restored as a sailing ship.

In recent decades, she has operated expedition voyages in remote northern waters, including Svalbard and Greenland.

The schooner is now run by Swan Expeditions and often participates in Tall Ships events around Europe.

Her visit marks an uncommon sighting for Dublin Bay watchers as traffic continues to build ahead of winter storms and follows September's visit of the 60-metre Norwegian tall ship Sørlandet and August's arrival of the 38-metre three-masted gaff-rigged schooner Blue Clipper.
