There was a striking contrast in shipping movements on Dublin Bay on Monday evening (August 31), as the Polish tall ship Fryderyk Chopin arrived in Scotsman’s Bay while the cruise liner Marina prepared to depart Dún Laoghaire.
The two vessels briefly shared the bay, providing an unusual meeting of traditional sail and modern cruise shipping off the south Dublin coast.
The 251-metre Oceania Cruises Marina had arrived at Dún Laoghaire on Monday morning, with her scheduled departure at 8pm after a day-long call.
Meanwhile, the two-masted, square-rigged STS Fryderyk Chopin made her evening arrival in Scotsman’s Bay, adding another tall ship visitor to Dublin Bay during a busy summer for sail-training vessels.
The Polish vessel operates sail-training and educational voyages and is scheduled to continue her 2026 programme during September.
The simultaneous movements produced an eye-catching scene, with Fryderyk Chopin approaching under her distinctive rig as Marina lay offshore ahead of her departure.
