Post-DL Regatta Event for Ultimate Bragging Rights
Competitors in this year's Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta are set to race for the ultimate bragging rights in a new bonus event.
The Royal Irish Yacht Club is proposing the one-day event on Sunday 31 July modelled on the ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship, where up to 16 teams will compete in a winner-takes-all contest with the prize of a significant voucher to go against their annual Dublin Bay Sailing Club subscription.
The best helms from Cruisers 1, 2 and 3, White Sails, Sigmas, Dragons, 31.7s and SB3s will compete using the symmetrical kite J80s in a round-robin fleet racing format.
Each participating DBSC class will have one team, selected by being the highest ranked DBSC boat in the Dun Laoghaire Regatta. Each class can decide if the team is chosen on a design, IRC or ECHO basis.
More details will be available in due course from the RIYC website.
49 Skippers for the Solitaire du Figaro 2011
The growing international interest in the race, now in its 42nd year, keeps the event in the limelight. Race Director Jacques Caraës has carefully designed the course this year to keep the challenge of dealing with tides, currents and local effects woven in with long days and nights of racing. Once again experience, instinct and talent will reward the best when hard tactical decisions are called for.
"The quality and technical level of the skippers participating in the 2011 Solitaire du Figaro reflects more than ever the calibre of the race. For sure it will be an edition with much suspense, the true Ultimate Challenge!" Jacques Caraës said.
The top players
Three past winners of the Solitaire du Figaro will be racing in an attempt to join that elite club of skippers that have two overall victories to their name. Amongst them are Nicolas Lunven, who won the title in 2009 and is regularly at the top of the class leaderboard. He will be up against Jérémie Beyou, winner in 2005 and one of the top players in short-handed offshore sailing. Eric Drouglazet, the third participant to have won the race in the past, took the top podium spot in 2001 and has long been a central character on the Figaro circuit. Frédéric Duthil, Gildas Morvan and Thierry Chabagny have all earned podium finishes and will be doing their level best to finally get to the top step of the podium. And how could one forget the steel-willed Jean-Paul Mouren who will be competing in his 25th Solitaire du Figaro! But the winner may well come from another source.
"Those who aim for the podium are a few and are not there to try and get second best in the race. Winners or not, all will be doing their utmost to win" commented Jacques Caraës.
And from the UK...
Since 1970, 13 Britons have participated in Solitaire du Figaro. Nigel King is now the doyen of that group coming back for his third attempt. Amongst his compatriots are Conrad Humphreys of Vendée Globe fame, the very current Phil Sharp of mini transat success and the extremely talented Sam Goodchild, prodigy of the Artemis Academy.
"There has never been such a strong British presence at the Figaro before. I'm sure young Sam Goodchild and the more experienced Nigel King, Conrad Humphreys and Phil Sharp between them will lead the British attack on the French sailors" continued Caraës.
With all the necessary ingredients for a top-grade sports competition, the 2011 Solitaire du Figaro will be as interesting as ever with its emotion, suspense and action. A rendez-vous not to be missed, starting with the Prologue in Perros-Guirec on 29 July.

Dun Laoghaire Lifeboats Aid Three People During Boat Drama
Four people were on board the craft when they got into difficulties off Shanganagh cliffs between Killiney and Bray. One person swam to shore to raise the alarm, two clung to a buoy while another was reported missing.
The RNLI's all-weather (ALB) lifeboat and inshore lifeboat launched at 14.08pm and proceeded to the scene, arriving 15 minutes later.
Dun Laoghaire RNLI volunteer crew recovered two of the casualties on board the inshore lifeboat while the Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter 116 located the missing person in the water. All three were transfered to the helicopter and taken to Tallaght Hospital for treatment.
Conditions were described as fresh with force four to five winds.
Galway Harbour Claims Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Race
From an early decision just after the start not to get sucked inshore, Galway Harbour led the race on handicap almost from start to finish. But even more remarkably, they led on the water for much of the race and only conceded the on-the-water lead to the top rated boat, keeping the other 8 higher rated boats well astern.
Coping with blown out sails, low visibility, a damaged vang, gale force winds with beam seas, no main for two hours and considerable sleep deprivation was swallowed up in their stride to the finish, pushing particularly hard in the final stage along the west Cork and Kerry coasts.
Lynx, for that is the yacht’s original name, was built originally for Sir Robin Knox Johnston’s Clipper Venture corporate training fleet. More recently she has racked up some successes as an IRC racer and underwent a complete refit in 2009. Skipper Martin Breen put together a formidable crew for the race and their mixed offshore and dinghy sailing experience combined successfully to take the overall prize.
Galway Harbour Crew: Martin Breen – Helm, Neil Spain - Helm 2, Aodhán Fitzgearld - W/L Navigator, John Murphy - W/L Tactician (Trim), Nigel Moss - Main Trimmer, Conor Baynes - Jib/ Kite (Main) Trimmer, Brian Phelan - Jib/ Kite Trimmer , Rachel O'Toole - Pit (Trim), Ruaidhrí De Faoite - Mast (Trim), Cathal Clarke - Bow (Trim)
Galway Harbour Approaches Dingle Finish
Galway Harbour has been brilliantly sailed, with Neil Spain backing up Martin Breen. Raging Bull has been there or thereabouts all race as has Aquelina. Legally Brunette could never quite get up to her handicap and Tsunami put in a bit of a spurt at the end. It's going to be very close between Raging Bull and Tsunami for second place. Too close to call. If Raging Bull finishes less than 1 hour 27 behind Tsunami she gets second.
At the moment it looks like the rest of the fleet are all also rans but we'll follow up with overalls later and see how it panned out.
Update: Pride of Dalkey Fuji Approaches the Fastnet
However, as the current weather system passes through, the veering wind should favour those closest inshore and Aquelina could make some gains prior to rounding the rock. That said, the crew of Galway Harbour haven't done much wrong so far and will be well aware of what they have to do to stay ahead.
While Pride of Dalkey Fuji looks set to take line honours, the battle is really on between Galway Harbour and Aquelina, with Dinah, Jedi and Orna fighting it out for the minor placings and Raging Bull losing our from her more offshore position.
History has shown that the race has sometimes been won and lost in the stretch between the Fastnet and Dingle and with the center of the system tracking just west of Dingle right now, an upset is a distinct possiblility.
From Brian Carlin onboard the Sigma 400, Raging Bull.
Location: 30 miles South East of The Fastnet
Time: 13:30
Right, not sure where to start, well we rounded Tuscar Rock at 10:30pm in a building sea, the 3G coverage disappeared and well after last night this has been my first opportunity to write anything.
A beautiful sunset started the evening but that was all that was nice about it. Grey dark clouds greeted out first night at sea, and it got cold on deck, sitting as the spray increasingly came across the decks.
Let's just say alot of the crew went quite and the great banter we had all day soon became a game of who was first to bed for some sleep and a dry area to stay..
It was 3am before I got below decks and our plan was to head south early while the winds allowed before the southerly direction forecast came into play.. it was a rough night with little sleep, main sail reefs in and then back out again trying to deal with the ever changing wind speed, which topped out at 26kts later that night, gusting 29knts.
When the morning broke I was back on deck, decision to say south was the plan, make the Fastnet lighthouse in one tack rather than beat up the coast, now we still don't know if this plan is going to pay, so we have an anxious wait until the rock to see if it worked.
We had the kite up for a while clocking speeds of 12knts , but a 2 foot tear in the mainsail slowed us up for 25mins as we repaired it.. It's fixed but not sure how long it will take this constant 20 knots right now...
Right I'm off to find some food as alot are taking the next couple of hours to rest before we make the big push north towards the Skelligs..
D2D report – 1700 BST, Saturday June 11th. After 6 hours the fleet is spread along the coast from Mizen Head to Wicklow Head with the leaders some 35 miles from the Tuskar, battling a north-going flood tide writes our Offshore Correspondent. Most of the fleet has closed the shore to try and duck out of the main stream. The decision as to when to make a move to the east as the ebb builds could prove crucial as the yachts struggle to establish an advantage. Arklow boat Aquelina may have an edge here from their local knowledge, but are trailing leader Galway Harbour and previous winner Legally Brunette, although there is not much between them on the water.
Top rated boat, Pride of Dalkey Fuji, is not living up to her billing and may find that going offshore early was not the best move. Current predictions put Galway Harbour as the handicap leader from Raging Bull and Aquelina, but its early doors yet and there is not much physical separation between the boats.
With building southeasterly forecast for Sunday, an early rounding of the Tuskar and eased sheets may provide further separation between the on the water leaders and the smaller lower handicap boats, who look likely to suffer from the backing breeze.
News from onboard Raging Bull from Brian Carlin:
Location: The Arklow Banks Time: 14:20
About 4 miles south of the Mulligans, the wind turned around to the east, it got very light for an hour and then it began to strengthen from the south east.. We had the kite up for quite a while but changed back to the head sail.. The Class 40 started to make some ground on us, but Lynx Racing the Reflex 38 still has the lead closely followed by Legally Brunette. We are approx 3 miles behind them, starting to hike hard now... It's getting bloody cold too...
On the bright side, Emma and Tracey had the shop open down below, but no chocolate been handed up to me yet as I type this with my cold fingers..
We passed Wicklow head with lots of tide against us, but we squeezed through.. We watch the Class 40 run a ground briefly, as we passed the sand bank to the south east of the headland, they got her off fairly quickly and are 200 meters behind us now.
Wind direction is slowly moving from it's south east direction further south. At this moment we are not making the next headland.
Time to sign off for now.
Dun Laoghaire to Dingle - First Leg Race Preview
This should advantage the smaller boats of the fleet initially, but could help the larger boats to get further along the south coast before the westerly sets in around midnight Sunday.
Alan McGettigan's Pride of Dalkey- Fuji should show a clean pair of heels to the fleet, but she will always be fighting the handicap and a slow start will not suit.
Expect to see quite a battle between 2009 winner Cathal Drohan's X41, Legally Brunette, the Tyrell J122 Aquelina and the relatively unknown Steve Kershaw's Fortuna Redux, the South African built Fast 42. ISORA class leading form has already been shown by Richard Tudor's Sgrech and Vincent Farrell's Tsunami, while Matt Davis' Sigma 400 Raging Bull is a recent winner.
While the handicap suggests that Pride of Dalkey-Fuji should take line honours, the current forecast suggest the overall winner will come from the lower rated boats.
Its going to be an interesting few days.
