Irish Optis Begin European Assault

Irish Optis Begin European Assault

Ireland's European Optimist team are pushing into the top flight at the European Championships in Poland, with Sean Donnelly leading the charge. The Dun Laoghaire sailor is currently tenth overall in the 146-boat boys fleet after two races, the first Irish boat by some 21 places. Seafra Guilfoyle is next in 31st. However, Patrick Crosbie and Peter McCann, down in 75th and 76th respectively, have plenty in the tank.

Both posted top five results in race two after counting OCS in the first race, so expect them to rocket up the standings once discards come into play.

Sophie Browne is the top Irish boat in the 101-boat girls' fleet in 27th, followed by Jill McGinley in 46th and Ericka Ruigrok in 63rd.

Racing continues today in Poland, with results HERE for the boys and HERE for the girls.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
