The Liffey Descent, a staple of the Irish and international canoeing racing calendar since 1960, took place on a challenging 30-kilometre course this year. Participants navigated ten weirs along the picturesque River Liffey.

Lower water levels added to the difficulty in 2025. This year’s leading pair, Finn Harris and Adrian Boros, secured victory in the Open K2 category, finishing with a time of 2:14:42. “We weren’t expecting such low water,” said Harris, a noted figure in Irish marathon racing.

Boros, a Hungarian marathon paddler and world-class medalist, joined Harris as the duo demonstrated exceptional skill. Their closest competitors, former Liffey winner Peter Egan and junior world champion Sean Butterly, finished four minutes behind.
Nearly 400 paddlers participated across various categories. Tom Brennan earned another title in the Men’s K1 after a sprint finish. Aoibhín Ní Bhroin won the Women’s K1, while Fergus Cooper and Eileen Kelly clinched victories in the large K1C category.

The event celebrates the paddling community. Mark Henderson, a wheelchair user, completed the race solo for the second time. His participation highlights the inclusivity of the sport. “Every challenge is an opportunity,” Henderson stated following his finish.
