Irish canoe sprint paddler Sean Butterly has won gold in the Junior Men's K1 1000m at the ICF Junior & U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax, Canada. The 18-year-old Salmon Leap Canoe Club athlete produced a commanding performance on Lake Banook to finish ahead of Germany's Timo Gessert and secure Ireland's latest world title.
The victory continues a rapid rise for the Kildare paddler. Butterly finished eighth in the same event at last year's championships before winning the Junior Men's K1 Long Course title at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Győr. He also claimed the Olympic Hopes K1 1000m title later in the season and made his senior international debut at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Szeged earlier this year.
Butterly's latest success ranks among Ireland's strongest performances in international canoe sprint racing and highlights the country's growing presence on the world stage.
