Tragedy struck this morning (Tuesday, August 13th) as the body of a kayaker, a man in his 60s, was recovered near Dungarvan in Co Waterford.
The kayaker had set out from Ceann Heilbhic yesterday and was reported missing after failing to return.
A search and rescue operation involving the Coast Guard, local lifeboat services, and the rescue helicopter was launched.
His body was located today by Bonmahon Coast Guard unit at approximately 8.30 am off Ballyvoyle head, Co.Waterford and recovered from the water by a naval service rib.
The marine rescue coordination centre, Dublin, and naval vessel LE Aobhinn, as on-scene coordinators, coordinated an extensive search, which was supported by Coast Guard Units from Bonmahon, Dunmore East, Tramore, Admore, and Youghal. Teams from Dunmore East, Helvick, and Youghal RNLI were also tasked.
Search and rescue conditions were described as challenging, with low lying mist and winds in the area.
After an extensive search effort, the body was discovered, and the search has now been called off.
The Coast Guard offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
