A Newry teenager who has already become the youngest solo swimmer to navigate the North Channel hopes to become the youngest person to complete Ireland’s “triple crown” swimming challenge.
As RTÉ News reports, Daniel Smyth (17) swam the width of Galway Bay in a time of 2 hours and 31 minutes on August 30th.
He hopes now to complete the 21km Baltimore-Fastnet swim in West Cork to secure his Irish “triple crown”.
Not only does he aim to be the youngest, but he is determined to complete the three swims in the shortest period of time.
Last September, he was part of the youngest team to swim the North Channel from Donaghadee, Co Down, to Portpatrick, Scotland, last September, and he then became the youngest individual to do the same swim of around 35m in July in a time of 12 hours and 26 minutes.
The Abbey Grammar School student took up open water swimming as part of waterpolo training, and became hooked.
He has paid tribute to his coach, Keith Garry. He received congratulations from Olympic Gold medallist Daniel Wiffen when he completed the North Channel.
