Daragh Morgan has said completing his round-Ireland swim is only the “tip of the iceberg” compared to the support he received from his small team and people who came out to help along the journey.

As previously reported on Afloat.ie, the Galway Bay endurance swimmer became one of the first Irish people to swim around the island of Ireland.

Morgan achieved the incredible feat over a period of nearly six months, averaging four hours and 15km per day in the water.

As he neared the finish line, Morgan discussed his efforts with Lorna Siggins on the Wavelengths podcast.

Speaking to The Journal ahead of a homecoming celebration in Galway Docks on Saturday evening (22 November), Morgan paid tribute to his team who were operating “on a shoestring” to help him in his efforts to raise funds for the Simon Community and the RNLI.

“No one really believed in us,” he said. “We had no corporate sponsorship at all, so we really relied on people donating to support the operational costs, which we tried to keep at an absolute minimum.”

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
