Meitheal Mara is teaming up with Welsh Sea Rowing and the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association for the '5 Miles from Home' rowing challenge. According to Meitheal Mara, this event can be "joined from anywhere in the world," with participants completing the 5-mile course on their local waters between August 27 and 31.

The organisers of the 'Ocean to City' coastal rowing race in Cork Harbour have declared a weather hope and wish – for next Summer!

"Fingers and toes crossed for some good weather this time," the Meitheal Mara people say, announcing the 2026 event for the June Bank Holiday Weekend, Saturday, May 30.

They deserve some good weather, having been hit by nasty conditions for the past few years.

Meantime, they are combining with Welsh Sea Rowing and the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association for the '5 Miles from Home' rowing challenge, which, Meitheal Mara says, can be "joined from anywhere in the world, participants completing the 5-mile course on their home waters from August 27-31."

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
