The National Rowing Centre closed down this morning. The facility had been hosting the international team, with clubs not permitted to use it recently because of the Covid-19 virus.

"Our High-Performance Athletes were previously training in isolation in the National Rowing Centre while adhering to the guidelines of the HSE and the Institute of Sport," Rowing Ireland said.

"After the decision by the IOC to postpone the Olympics, we have decided to cease training amongst the High-Performance Team.

"Rowing Ireland has now decided that closing the National Rowing Centre is in the best interest of the athletes, coaches and support staff.

"We want to thank Lee Valley Golf Club for providing accommodation for our athletes during this time and to the local community for their continued support."

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
