Rowing Ireland proudly acknowledges the remarkable achievements of Dominic Casey, who received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from University College Cork (UCC) during a prestigious ceremony on December 12, 2024.
This recognition places Casey among a distinguished group of honourees, including celebrated figures like actor Jeremy Irons and humanitarian Dr. Adi Roche. The conferring ceremony took place at UCC’s Aula Maxima, where Dr. Brian O’Flaherty introduced Casey, highlighting his outstanding contributions to the sport of rowing over the past four decades.
As a former champion sculler, Casey has made an indelible mark through both his athletic and coaching careers. Beginning his ascent as an athlete in the 1980s, Casey's prowess earned him countless National Championships in single and double sculls. His legacy continues as the Head Coach of Skibbereen Rowing Club, guiding the club to an impressive collection of 190 National Championship titles and nurturing 229 green jersey athletes, many of whom have competed at the Olympic level.
In his current role as High-Performance Coach for Rowing Ireland's lightweight teams, Casey has amassed over 32 senior international medals and led the Irish rowing squad to historic milestones, including the nation's first Olympic medal in rowing at the Rio 2016 Games. This was followed by extraordinary successes, including a world record at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and recently coaching the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls team to gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The rowing community has widely celebrated Casey's contributions. Annamarie Phelps, President of European Rowing, praised his role in elevating Irish rowing on the European stage, while Jane Williams, President of Rowing Ireland, hailed his vision and inspiring leadership. Michelle Carpenter, CEO of Rowing Ireland, noted Casey’s transformational coaching methods that empower rising athletes to reach new heights.
