RWE Renewables will sponsor Ireland’s Biggest Annual Windsurfing event to sponsor Mayo Mayhem ’24
As Afloat reported earlier, the event's exact location, days and times will be announced on Wednesday, September 25th.
RWE has announced that it is the main sponsor of Ireland’s biggest annual windsurfing event, which takes place this September in County Mayo.
Mayo Mayhem is held in Belmullet in Mayo and attracts some of the best windsurfers from across the globe who come to compete in the wild North Atlantic, trying to secure points for the windsurfing world tour. The RWE sponsorship is significant, enabling the Mayo Mayhem event to achieve a ‘3 star status’ on the World Windsurfing World Tour. ‘3 star events’ have a set minimum prize money fund along with high quality video media productions such as the inclusion of high-quality drone video footage. Through the RWE funding, this has been achieved.
Malcolm Scott, organiser of Mayo Mayhem, said, “We are delighted to have RWE on board for our flagship event. The crossover between windsurfing and wind energy isn’t hard to figure out. It is great to have them supporting us through this sponsorship as our country transitions towards carbon neutrality. We look forward to what looks like a fantastic competition and can’t wait to meet competitors, spectators, volunteers and all involved at the end of September.”
RWE’s Head of Onshore Renewables Development (Wind Solar and Storage) Ireland, Cliona O’Sullivan commented on the sponsorship, “We are pleased to sponsor this competition for the world’s top windsurfers and to showcase what Ireland has to offer international windsurfers across the globe. This sponsorship highlights our underlying commitment to developing renewable energy in the Northwest. RWE is currently developing onshore and offshore wind in Ireland as well as solar, battery energy storage and helping to develop new innovative technologies, including our Airborne Wind Test site at Bangor Erris.”
RWE has four operational projects, including a wind farm in Dromadda Beg in Co Kerry, two battery storage facilities in Co Dublin and Co Monaghan, and the Airborne Wind Test site in County Mayo. The company has renewable energy projects in different stages of development, including two offshore wind farms, ten onshore wind farms, and a further battery storage facility. RWE’s objective is to be Ireland's long-term energy partner during the country’s transition to carbon neutrality.
RWE is exploring and supporting industry innovation and technological advances across all fields of wind power. As part of its Technological Innovation, RWE has developed the Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) test site in Bangor Erris in Co Mayo.
