The Environmental Projection Agency has agreed to issue a licence to the Department of the Marine for the long-awaited Howth Harbour dredging project.

That’s according to Howth Yacht Club Commodore Kevin Monks, who in his latest Commodore’s Update to club members reports from a Howth Harbours Users Forum meeting with department officials last week.

It’s understood that preparatory works will get under way at the end of this year.

Commodore Monks said the development “is very positive news and I would like to sincerely thank all those who have assisted in getting it granted.

“The list of those who enabled this result is endless, but the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Howth’s Harbourmaster Harold McLoughlin, our fellow harbour users and our local politicians deserve a special mention of our appreciation.”

As reported on Afloat.ie in February, Howth Harbour has been awarded €4 million for dredging under a €27 million national investment programme for fishery harbours and marine infrastructure.
