The Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) has received an application from a company which has plans to run a 2,800km undersea telecoms cable between Galway, France and the Iberian peninsula.
Deep Sea Fibre Networks has applied to carry out marine environmental surveys on Ballyloughane beach near Renmore where it proposes to start the cable linking Ireland to France, Spain and Portugal.
The company secured European grants of at least 8 million euro to conduct studies on the cable system, and a further 29 million euro to build it.
The company says that there will be no impact on the beach, and liaison will take place with the local fishing community.
The application for the actual installation of the PISCES system fibre optic cable is expected to be made in 2026.
If approved, the cable will be laid in 2027, the company says.
