The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs is due to discuss Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) with stakeholders on Tuesday (Dec 9).
The meeting at 11 am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from representatives from the Marine Institute (MI), the Irish Islands Marine Resource Organisation (IIMRO) and the National Inshore Fishermen’s Association (NIFA).
Ahead of the meeting, committee chair Conor McGuinness said: “Marine Protected Areas are geographically defined areas designated and managed for the long-term conservation of marine resources, ecosystems services, or cultural heritage.”
“Last month the Minister of State with responsibility for Fisheries, Timmy Dooley, told the committee that the Government plans to update legislation on Ireland’s MPAs by amending the 2021 Marine Area Planning Bill,” he said.
“The committee looks forward to discussing with our stakeholders the recommendations of the Marine Advisory Group published in 2021 on updating and developing our MPAs and the outcome of the subsequent public consultation,” he said.
“Members are particularly interested in hearing from the Marine Institute on the ongoing development and management of MPAs, and also the views of the IIMRO and NIFA on the consultation process to date and the development of protected zones and models to ensure sustainability of fishing communities,” he said.
“The committee will hold further engagement with stakeholders next month, including environmental bodies and representatives of the seafood sector.”
The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
