The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs will discuss inshore and island fishing with Minister of State for Fisheries Timmy Dooley and his officials on Tuesday (Nov 25).
Ahead of the meeting, committee cathaoirleach Conor McGuinness said: “The committee met in September and October with representatives of the inland and island fishing enterprises to hear their concerns”.
“These included the need for increased subsidies to support inshore and island fishing, better access to social welfare, rising fuel and other costs, and calls for a rebalancing of quotas towards smaller fishing boats,” he said.
“The committee looks forward to meeting with Minister of State Dooley and department officials to discuss these and related matters,” he said.
“Members would also like an update on when the Strategy for Inshore Fisheries Sector covering 2024-2029 will be published, and to discuss how Ireland can copy the success of small-scale fisheries such as Cornwall in Britain in creating a higher ratio of fishing boats to jobs ashore.”
The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs has 14 members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
