A Government mediator has been appointed to resolve an impasse between the commercial fishing and offshore renewable energy (ORE) sectors.
As The Irish Times reports, Minister of State for Fisheries and Marine Timmy Dooley says the effort is “making progress”.
He told the Wind Energy Ireland conference that he had appointed former head of the Labour Relations Commission, Kieran Mulvey as mediator after talks at the Government’s seafood/ORE working group reached a deadlock in April.
The newspaper reports that the ORE sector wanted to focus the discussions on developing a formula for compensating fishermen for disruption of business in the near future, whereas fishing industry representatives “favoured negotiations on the likely longer-term impact on their businesses”.
The ORE sector had said this raised “broader policy issues better dealt with by Government”.
The seafood/ORE working group was established in 2022 to try and avoid possible clashes between the two industries. Membership includes Wind Energy Ireland, seafood producer groups, Government departments and State agencies.
