Galway will host a major international gathering on the future of the Atlantic Ocean during Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union next year.
Atlantic Technological University (ATU), the Marine Institute and University of Galway have announced plans for Atlantic Summit Galway 2026, which will take place on 8-9 October 2026. The event is being supported by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
Leaders from ocean research, policy, industry and wider society are expected to attend the two-day conference to help shape priorities for the Atlantic region within Europe's ocean agenda.
The summit will focus on advancing ocean research, developing future skills and encouraging innovation to support a sustainable and resilient ocean economy. Organisers say the event comes at a significant time for international cooperation on ocean sustainability and will contribute to priorities under the EU Ocean Pact.
Announcing the summit on World Oceans Day, ATU President Dr Orla Flynn said the Atlantic plays a vital role in Ireland's climate, communities and economy. "As a Technological University with campuses across the West and North West region, ATU is proud to announce the Atlantic Summit Galway 2026," she said.
"This summit, during Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, will bring together leaders and expertise from across Europe and beyond to drive progress in ocean knowledge and innovation, positioning the Atlantic and Galway at the heart of Europe's ocean future."
The programme will feature keynote sessions, strategic discussions, and collaborative workshops, alongside scientific and community-focused events that highlight marine research and innovation.
Galway's position on Ireland's Atlantic seaboard and its established marine research sector were key factors in its selection as host city. Further details on the programme and registration will be released in the coming weeks.
