A West Coast family’s Atlantic sailing adventure is the theme of a talk this weekend in the Galway City Museum. Across the Atlantic - A Family Adventure with a Message from the Deep is the title of the talk by marine scientist Vera Quinlan.

As Afloat has reported, Vera, her husband Peter Quinlan, and their two children, Lilian and Ruairí, then 10 and 12 years old, took their yacht Danú on a 14-month voyage across the Atlantic.

The couple had given their Mauritius-class steel ketch, built to a Bruce Roberts design, a complete refit beforehand.

Quinlan will talk about their voyage from Galway Bay to Morocco, the Caribbean, French Guiana and the Azores – with the Covid-19 pandemic becoming a reality during their trip. She will recall how one small Argo float launched from their yacht became part of global ocean science.

The talk takes place as part of Galway City Museum’s An Tír Faoi Thoinn exhibition outreach programme and is aimed at families, young explorers and anyone curious about the sea beneath the surface. The talk takes place in the Galway City Museum (H91 CX5P) from 11 am to 12 noon on Saturday, June 13th.

The museum says the event is FREE of charge, but seats are limited.
