EirGrid has announced a major procurement package worth hundreds of millions of euros to support offshore wind delivery.
The package marks the first major transmission procurement under its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast programme.
It focuses on the Tonn Nua substation package, a key element in connecting offshore wind to the national grid.
The scope includes design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of offshore substations.
It also covers associated high-voltage equipment, onshore compensation works and engineering services.
The move follows Ireland’s 2021 shift to a plan-led rollout of offshore renewables.
EirGrid has been tasked with delivering infrastructure to meet the Government’s target of 5GW of offshore wind capacity.
The procurement will launch on the Achilles Supply Line platform on April 23.
It reflects what EirGrid described as a “more integrated and scalable packaging strategy”.
Speaking at the WindEurope Conference 2026 in Madrid, chief executive Cathal Marley said the investment demonstrates progress.
“It is estimated that the substation package procurements being launched today will be valued in excess of hundreds of millions of euros,” he said.
He added that the work is “a critical step towards a cleaner energy future”.
Marley urged suppliers to engage with the process to help unlock Ireland’s offshore wind potential.
Minister of State Timmy Dooley said Ireland is at a “pivotal moment” for offshore development.
He pointed to the National DMAP and recent Tonn Nua auction as evidence of momentum.
“Today’s event…shows this collaborative model is delivering real momentum,” he said.
The Tonn Nua connection is expected to deliver around 900MW of electricity.
That is enough to power almost one million homes.
