Storm Amy, the first storm of the 2025/26 season, is set to impact Ireland on Friday, 3rd October. Heavy rain is expected to begin on Thursday, 2nd October, particularly affecting the north-west, west, and south-west regions.
The forecaster has issued a Status Red storm warning from Loop Head to Rossan Point and Fair Head, effective from Friday 03/10/2025 until 20:00 on the same day. Southwest to west winds may reach violent storm force 11 at times.
Waterways Ireland has issued a warning of high water levels on the Shannnon Navigation and the RNLI has urged the public to stay away from coastal areas.
According to Meteorologist Ailís Hankinson, “Storm Amy will bring wet and very windy conditions on Friday.” She added that the storm will be preceded by a band of heavy rain on Thursday.
Hankinson also warned of potential travel difficulties, saying, “Loose objects or flying debris” may cause hazards. The prevalence of leafy trees could lead to higher risks of fallen trees and blocked drains, increasing the chance of localised flooding.
She stressed that small, upland river catchments are at the most significant risk. Precautions are advised in those areas to prevent flooding.
Warnings are in place: both yellow and orange rainfall and wind warnings have been issued for Thursday and Friday. These warnings may extend into Saturday in some areas of the north-west.
