As Storm Amy approaches, the RNLI is issuing safety warnings for those near the coast and inland waterways. The storm is expected to bring wet and windy weather, with gusts reaching up to 80 mph on Friday, 3 October, and Saturday.
Linda-Gene Byrne, RNLI Water Safety Lead, stated, “Storm Amy is set to bring potentially dangerous conditions. We’re asking the public to stay vigilant.” Visitors to coastal areas are advised to keep their distance from the water, as conditions can be treacherous.
In the event of falling into water, the RNLI advises, “Float to Live: lie back with your head far enough back that your ears are wet.” If you see someone in distress, call 999 or 112 for the Coast Guard, and do not attempt to enter the water yourself.
The RNLI's key safety advice includes:
- Maintain a safe distance from rough seas and cliff edges.
- Check weather forecasts and tide times before heading out.
- Carry a fully charged mobile phone and inform someone of your plans.
In case of an emergency, always call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
