Drogheda Port was brought into sharp colour just before Christmas with the unveiling of Morning Commute. The painting was revealed by Laytown-based artist Phil Daly, winner of the 2025 Drogheda Port Company Annual Arts Commission. The work presents a fresh view of daily life on the River Boyne, using vivid colour and fluid movement.
Daly is known for his use of bold, tropical tones. Blues, golds and violets dominate the scene, transforming a familiar working river into a celebratory image.
At the centre is a pilot boat crossing the water on its morning run, reflecting the everyday role of port workers. The expansive sky suggests a new day, balancing calm and energy across the composition.
Speaking at the unveiling, Daly said the commission held special meaning.
“Through vibrant colours and detailed scenes, I strive to capture the essence of maritime living,” he said. He added that his work aims to celebrate and preserve Drogheda’s coastal culture and identity.
Drogheda Port Company said the artwork connects people with the port’s past, present and future. “This commission is about more than art on a wall,” said CEO Paul Fleming. “Phil’s piece captures the port beautifully, radiating colour, confidence, and warmth.”
The annual arts commission remains a key part of the port’s cultural programme, highlighting regional talent and community engagement.
