Dun Laoghaire Senator Barry Ward is conducting a survey to present to DLRCoCo and the relevant minister to show that bathing water in Dublin Bay should be tested 365 days a year, not just in the summer months.
While the official bathing season ended on 15 September, Senator Ward notes: “We know people use the water all year round. Currently water is only tested every two weeks during the winter — from 15 September onwards — and once per week during the summer bathing season.”
The senator says: “I have received a lot of feedback from swimmers, sailors, stand-up paddle boarders and kayakers that they are unsatisfied with the water quality in Dublin Bay.
“Bathing prohibition notices have been frequent this summer due to heavy rainfall, with the excess rainwater putting drains and sewerage systems in the local area under pressure, before spilling over, untreated, into Dublin Bay and Killiney Bay.
“This has health impacts not just on anyone using the water as a leisure amenity, but on the ecosystem, and any marine life that enters the food chain when eaten.”
Senator Ward adds: “Dublin Bay water quality is important to us all, whether you enjoy the Christmas Day dip or swim all year round.”
