A newly rediscovered view of Dublin Bay will headline Adam’s Irish Old Masters auction in Dublin this December.
The painting, attributed to Italian artist Gabriele Ricciardelli, shows a fashionable couple overlooking the bay from Mount Merrion. Ricciardelli was active in Ireland in the 1760s.
Adam’s says the 18th-century work is a “wonderful highlight for the auction” and is now seeking further consignments.
Dublin Bay in the 1760s — Maritime Snapshot
Dublin Bay in the mid-18th century was a busy gateway for trade, shipbuilding and passenger travel.
Vessels arriving from Britain and Europe brought timber, wine and textiles, while exports of linen, grain and livestock left through the same waters.
Sandbanks made navigation hazardous. Plans for harbour improvements emerged in this era, decades before the construction of Dún Laoghaire Harbour transformed access to the capital.
Ricciardelli’s depiction captures the bay as both a scenic landmark and a working maritime landscape.
The sale takes place on Thursday, 4 December at St Stephen’s Green. The consignment deadline is Friday, 7 November.
“We connect outstanding artworks with passionate collectors,” said managing director Stuart Cole.
