James Joyce's Dublin will be explored from a different angle this Bloomsday with two special boat tours around Dublin Bay and the River Liffey. Dublin Boat Tour, operating from the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School in Dún Laoghaire, has organised themed RIB cruises on Tuesday, 16 June, to mark the annual celebration of Joyce and his novel *Ulysses*.
The morning cruise departs at 10.30 am and follows the River Liffey Tour route from Dún Laoghaire into Dublin city. Passengers will pass Sandycove's Martello Tower, home to the James Joyce Museum, and the nearby Forty Foot, where *Ulysses* famously opens.
Harbour Heritage — A Dublin Boat Tour RIB passes Dún Laoghaire's East Pier lighthouse during a route that explores many of the coastal and maritime locations associated with James Joyce and Ulysses
The two-hour voyage continues past Sandymount Strand before entering the River Liffey and travelling through the centre of Dublin. Landmarks along the route include Poolbeg Lighthouse, the Poolbeg Chimneys and the former Pigeon House Power Station.
A second cruise leaves Dún Laoghaire at 2 pm for a 90-minute tour of Dublin Bay. The route includes the harbour's East and West Pier lighthouses, Sandycove, Sandymount Strand, Scotsman's Bay, Dalkey Sound and the harbours of Bullock and Coliemore.
Passengers may also spot seals and other wildlife around Dalkey Island.
The tours have an additional literary link through Clongowes Wood College, attended by Joyce and his fictional character Stephen Dedalus. The college now maintains sailing links through its partnership with the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School. While Bloomsday events traditionally focus on Dublin's streets and landmarks, these cruises highlight the coastal settings that feature throughout Joyce's writing.
Adult fares start from €37.50, with concession rates available. No boating experience is required. Both cruises depart from and return to the West Pier in Dún Laoghaire.
