The annual “Casting of the Spear” ceremony was staged on Dublin Bay on Friday as Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam revived one of the capital’s oldest maritime traditions.
Hosted by Dublin Port Company at Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club, the event marks the symbolic eastern boundary of Dublin City.
The tradition dates back to 1488 when then Lord Mayor Thomas Mayler rode on horseback to the edge of Dublin Bay and cast a spear into the sea.
Each year, the custom is re-enacted by the sitting Lord Mayor, who becomes Honorary Admiral of Dublin Port.
Speaking at the event, Councillor McAdam said Dublin Port remained “at the heart of Dublin City”.
“I’m honoured to be taking part in this year’s Casting of the Spear, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 15th century,” he said.
“The Port plays a vital role not only in Dublin’s economy, but in Ireland’s as a whole, while also supporting the vibrant water sports clubs along the River Liffey.”
The ceremony is regarded as one of the most symbolic occasions in the Dublin Port calendar.
