Two sailing organisations have received funding from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council under the Community Climate Action Programme.
Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club (DMYC) and Sailing in Dublin (SID) were among 26 groups to receive funds amounting to a total of €993,011 towards projects addressing the impacts of climate change.
DMYC, located on Dun Laoghaire’s West Pier, has been approved for funding totalling €63,000 under a community energy category for replacement of single glazed windows with energy efficient double glazed windows.
SID in the Coal Harbour has been approved for a sum of €45,820 to replace petrol outboard engines with electric alternatives and install solar and wind‐generation systems on the club's sailboats.
The project also includes upgrading to long‐life lithium batteries and adding solar‐charged backup batteries at the storage area.
The local authority said the “significant investment in climate action” would empower a wide range of local organisations, including sports clubs, residents’ associations, community centres, community gardens and faith-based groups to “deliver meaningful initiatives in areas such as community energy, active travel, the circular economy and biodiversity”.
“ Funded projects include energy retrofits, solar panel installations on community buildings and sports facilities, lighting upgrades, materials for community gardens, bike racks, tree planting initiatives, and rainwater harvesting systems,”it said
Cllr Jim Gildea, cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said the Community Climate Action Programme “offers a unique opportunity for local communities to access financial support while taking meaningful climate action in their own areas”.
“It is inspiring to see so many groups delivering diverse and impactful projects that not only contribute to national climate and energy targets but also bring real benefits to local communities. Their dedication and leadership are to be warmly commended,”he said.
