A new display at the harbour’s historic anemometer will bring Dublin Bay weather observations to East Pier visitors from Thursday 22 October.
A live weather information display at Dún Laoghaire Harbour’s historic East Pier anemometer is due to go live at 10.30am on Thursday 22 October.
Powered by dublinbaybuoy.com, the screen will bring weather observations from the Dublin Bay buoy to sailors, walkers and other harbour users.
Weather on the pier
A countdown is already running on the screen, beneath an announcement bearing Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council and Cruising Association of Ireland branding.
The DublinBayBuoy website provides observations including wind speed, gusts, wind direction, wave height and water temperature, using data from the Irish Lights buoy in Dublin Bay.
Historic landmark
The new display adds a digital element to one of the East Pier’s familiar maritime landmarks.
Afloat covered the refurbishment and return of the anemometer pylon in June 2024, following its removal that January. The pylon stands above a small granite building set into the pier wall.
Harbour heritage
The interpretation panel now accompanying the display records the historic anemometer’s restoration in 2025.
It also explains that the Greek inscription on the building’s pediment refers to the Anemoi, the four ancient wind gods representing the north, south, east and west winds.
Alongside the weather display, visitors can scan QR codes for weather data and the harbour heritage trail.
