Operator Stena Line wants to demolish Holyhead’s unused former ferry berth and terminal at the North Wales port.
The single berth is located in the inner harbour and had previously been part of Irish Sea routes from the Anglesey port, serving the company and its predecessors, linking Dun Laoghaire Harbour.
In addition, this terminal served the rival firm B&I Line, which was acquired by Irish Ferries, connecting Dublin Port, where Stena Line began initially with freight, in 1995. However, ultimately, Stena abandoned Dun Laoghaire when the Stena HSS fast ferry ceased in 2014.
But the Welsh terminal’s inner harbour, sited close to the adjacent train station, has not been in use for several years, as Irish Sea ferry services relocated to other berths within the UK’s second busiest ferry port.
The company that operates the ferry port, Stena Line Ports Ltd, now wants to knock down the terminal building. At this stage no final decision has been taken by the Swedish-owned ferry company on what would replace the terminal that only served conventional car ferries.
Stena has applied to Isle of Anglesey County Council for permission to carry out the demolition work.
