Norwegian aquaculture multinational Mowi has identified “challenging biology” as the reason for lower farmed fish harvests in Ireland last year.
As The Sunday Independent reports, the company attributes higher than normal sea temperatures, along with naturally occurring harmful phytoplankton and zooplankton blooms, for “very low volumes”.
Mowi said in a trading update that its Irish division harvested 500 tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2022, down from 1,500 tonnes the previous year.
Mowi’s salmon of Irish origin business reported an operational loss of €5m.
Mowi reported a harvest volume of 130,500 tonnes, including farms in Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Chile, Canada and the Faroe Islands. Full-year harvest volumes were 464,000 tonnes.
Mowi employs nearly 12,000 people globally and is represented in 25 countries. It reported a turnover of €4.2bn in 2021.
