A West Cork seafood processor has completed a €500,000 investment to expand production and drive innovation. Shellfish Ireland, based in Castletownbere, said the upgrade will grow sales and widen its range of value-added seafood products. The investment includes new automation, upgraded packaging systems and enhanced processing equipment.

It is expected to support annual sales of more than €14 million and return the company to pre-COVID profitability.

Grant aid of €236,000 was provided under the Seafood Processing Capital Investment Scheme through the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. The scheme is operated by Bord Iascaigh Mhara and co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.

Richard Donnelly, interim CEO of Bord Iascaigh Mhara, said the project highlights innovation in the sector. “This investment by Shellfish Ireland is a great example of how Irish seafood entrepreneurs are adopting both innovation and sustainability to stay ahead of the competition,” he said. He added that improved production processes and new product lines would strengthen resilience and support industry growth.

Shellfish Ireland sources seafood from more than 160 inshore fishermen across Ireland, supporting coastal economies. The company has introduced renewable and energy-efficient systems, including solar power, to reduce its carbon footprint.

Chief Executive Carol Harrington said the funding underpins a three-year strategy to expand in domestic and international markets.

“Export sales currently account for approximately 65% of total turnover, with France and Spain representing our largest overseas destinations,” she said. She said the company plans to consolidate its position in Europe while re-entering Asian markets, including China, following regulatory changes.

Italy has also been identified as a growth market, with tailored products designed to meet local consumer demand. “Retail customers are increasingly looking for convenience and better value, and this investment allows us to respond directly to those needs,” Ms Harrington added.

Founded in 1987 by local fishermen, Shellfish Ireland operates from a 24,000 sq ft processing facility in Castletownbere. The company employs up to 140 people in peak season and 110 year-round, making it the largest employer in the Beara Peninsula. It is HACCP-approved, AA BRC certified and a member of Origin Green and the Irish Crab FIP programme.
