Independent Senator Victor Boyhan has joined the Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Marine Affairs. His experience includes serving as a former director of Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company.
The committee met on 20 May 2025 to outline its work programme. Boyhan emphasised the need to advocate for coastal and fishing communities.
"I will suggest we visit these communities to understand their challenges," he said. He highlighted issues with small piers that are falling into disrepair and lacking necessary amenities.
Boyhan noted, “Many piers urgently need investment to support local fishing and tourism.” Current funding for these projects is limited.
He has requested a report from the Minister for the Marine, Timmy Dooley TD, outlining funding allocations for 2025. “We need to prioritise small piers for additional funding," he stated.
"I have asked the Minister for the Marine, Timmy Dooley TD, to provide a report on all funding allocations from his department for 2025 and to prioritise small piers for additional funding streams to secure marine infrastructure and to advance all other support options for fishing, coastal and island communities".
