Sligo County Council has submitted a funding application for a long-awaited marina at Rosses Point.
The Sligo Champion reports that the council’s director of services Emer Concannon told a monthly meeting of the council that the application for funds has been submitted to the Department of Rural and Community Development.
It was applied for under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) Fourth call for Category 2 applications.
“The purpose of RRDF Category 2 funding is defined as 'project development and enabling initiatives' to reach readiness to apply for Category 1 RRDF (Capital) funding at a future date,” she told the council.
The local authority chair, Councillor Declan Bree, had raised the issue on the agenda.
“The development of a community boat park or marina, west of the RNLI Station in Rosses Point, will certainly be a significant advantage for local boat owners, boat operators and anglers, ”he said.
“Thanks are due to all those in the Rosses Point community who have worked on this project to date,” he said, adding that “we now need to lobby the Government to ensure that the necessary grant is provided to advance the development”,
Funding for a marina at Rosses Point had been provided for as far back as 2001, but a number of proposed marina projects did not proceed.
