Weather has forced postponement of the Omey races on the strand separating Connemara’s Omey island from Claddaghduff.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall have been forecast for the west coast on Sunday, August 4th.
The Omey races had been due to take place during low Spring tide on the strand on Sunday.
Main organiser Feichin Mulkerrin said they would be rescheduled to Sunday August 24th.
Last held in 2019, they were suspended for several years due to Covid-19 and then due to insurance.
The Omey races were originally known as a farmers’ meet for working horses, with events including currach races, sports, a bicycle race - and even a car race one year.
The races were suspended in 1963, but revived by Mulkerrin and a voluntary committee in 2001.
The meet now attracts thoroughbreds from all over the country, and many professional jockeys cut their teeth at Omey.
