On the Isle of Man people are being asked to wear red to mark today’s Merchant Navy Day (3 September).

The annual event is to honour the dedication and sacrifice of seafarers past and present and celebrate and champion everyday heroes.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the charity’s ‘Fly the Red Ensign’ campaign, as an effort to address a lack of awareness about the contributions of merchant seafarers.

Captain Lee Clarke, chair of the King George's Fund for Sailors, says they'd like to see local companies get involved with the charity and raise awareness.

As an Island nation, he said that we are more reliant than most on those who work at sea – as the captain outlined in this audio link on Manx Radio.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
