Warrenpoint and Kilkeel libraries in Co Down are set to host a special exhibition that will showcase a collection of photographs featuring the iconic Haulbowline Lighthouse, the scenic Carlingford Lough area and the historic Newry Canal in Northern Ireland.

‘Celebrating 200 Years of Haulbowline Lighthouse’ will be displayed in Warrenpoint Library from Thursday 20 to Saturday 29 June, and then in Kilkeel Library from Saturday 3 to Tuesday 9 July.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the rich history of the lighthouse and the surrounding area through a series of photographs and accompanying information.

Haulbowline Lighthouse shone its first light in September 1824. The construction was prompted by complaints that the existing shore-based Cranfield Point Lighthouse inadequately marked the channel and dangerous rocks at the entrance to Carlingford Lough.

Standing 34 meters tall with eight floors, the lighthouse once housed accommodation for three lighthouse keepers but has been fully automated since 17 March 1965.

This free exhibition is open to all members of the public, and everyone is welcome to attend during normal library opening hours (for hours, visit librariesni.org.uk or for more information, get in touch with the branch: Warrenpoint Library at +44 28 4175 3375 or [email protected] and Kilkeel Library at +44 28 4176 2278 or [email protected]).

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
