Naval ship L.É. James Joyce was named in Dun Laoghaire harbour this afternoon at a Naming and Commissioning ceremony attended by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, T.D. and the Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney, T.D.

The naming ceremony of the €50m OPV was conducted by Ms Carol Joyce who is a grand-niece of James Joyce.

The ship's Captain, Lt Commander Brian Dempsey was presented with a Commissioning Warrant by the Minister for Defence.

The latest vessel in the Naval fleet was berthed alongside Dun Laoghaire's Carlisle Pier for the ceremony. The ship is the second of three being built by Babcock Marine in Devon for the Irish Naval Service. The total cost of the programme is in the region of €200m. The LE Samuel Beckett was commissioned in May of last year.

The vessel will be open to the public from 2pm to 5pm on Wednesday, 2 September.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
