The Port of Milford Haven in south Wales has celebrated a significant milestone with the keel-laying ceremony for its new 22-metre pilot transfer vessel.

Currently the newbuild is being constructed for the Pembrokeshire port in the Netherlands by Next Generation Shipyards, based in Lauwersoog.

This new vessel is the first step in a long-term, multi-million pound investment programme aimed at enhancing the port's pilotage capabilities and providing first-rate pilotage operations at the UK energy port.

At the keel-laying ceremony yesterday, traditionally marking the start of the boat's construction, the occasion signified an exciting phase in the project that promises to bring enhanced safety, reliability, and efficiency to the port’s operations.

The modern pilot transfer vessel will serve as a vital part of Port of Milford Haven’s commitment to maintaining its high standards of pilotage services.

Mike Ryan, Harbourmaster at the Port of Milford Haven, commented: “Today’s keel laying ceremony is a momentous occasion for everyone involved in the project. This new vessel represents our commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence. As the UK's leading energy port, we understand the importance of having world-class infrastructure in place to support our customers and maintain our competitive advantage. This pilot vessel will significantly enhance our ability to serve the many types of vessels that visit Milford Haven."
