Shannon Foynes Port Company is to get a major expansion of its jetty in Foynes, as well as the opening of a large industrial serviced logistics hub for the region.

The announcement of the mid-western port will also position SFPC to become an international logistics location of scale, following its formal opening yesterday. Foynes is one of six SFPC terminals lining the Shannon estuary, stretching from Kerry to Loop Head to Limerick City.

The development at Foynes comes as a result of an investment of €32 million on upgrading the freight landing (read, related rail line to Limerick city) and storage facilities by the SFPC. In addition to funds from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to boost one of Europe’s natural deepest estuarial ports with depths up to 32m.

Over the past two years, Foynes has already seen an expansion in works, with an additional 117 metre long jetty, coupled with more than 12,000sq/m set down freight space adjoining the jetty.

In addition, the port on the shores of Co. Limerick is where a 38 hectare site to develop over 55,000sq/m of logistics warehousing capacity, has also been expanded.

Its deepwater allows for large bulk carrier vessels to sail along the Shannon estuary, and this new investment is to enable ambitious objectives set out in the company’s Vision 2041 masterplan.

RTE News has further details of the investment in infrastructure that could lessen congestion on the east coast and enhance its role in the national supply chain.

Shannon Foynes Port Information

Shannon Foynes Port (SFPC) are investing in an unprecedented expansion at its general cargo terminal, Foynes, adding over two-thirds the size of its existing area. In the latest phase of a €64 million investment programme, SFPC is investing over €20 million in enabling works alone to convert 83 acres on the east side of the existing port into a landbank for marine-related industry, port-centric logistics and associated infrastructure. The project, which will be developed on a phased basis over the next five years, will require the biggest infrastructure works programme ever undertaken at the port, with the entire 83 acre landbank having to be raised by 4.4 metres. The programme will also require the provision of new internal roads and multiple bridge access as well as roundabout access.
