A Donegal fisherman has died in a tragic incident in Castletownbere, Co Cork, at the weekend.
The man has been named as Damien McGuinness, from Church Road in Killybegs, and the incident occurred in the harbour at about 5.30pm on Saturday.
Emergency services including the RNLI were involved in helping to recover him from the water.
Castletownbere is currently hosting a week-long festival of the sea.
As The Irish Times reports, Deputy Mayor of Co Cork Cllr Finbarr Harrington said that his thoughts and prayers were with the families of the deceased man.
“I just opened the festival last night. It is a great family festival so for something like this to happen is very sad,”he said.
"Castletownbere has seen its share of tragedies in the water and of course something like this brings it back to people who have been in this position,” he said.
The body of Mr McGuinness has been taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital, where a postmortem examination will be carried out and an inquest will be held at a later date.
