Quantum Sails Ireland are delighted to congratulate Brian Hall for his amazing Overall win at the Scottish series on J/109 Something else, co-owned by himself and his father John from the National Yacht Club.
The boat has a full suit of Quantum sails, with the upwind sails being Quantum Fusion M Carbon Membranes and the downwind sails being produced from Contender Superkote material.

The Halls came to Quantum in 2023, having used sails from other sailmakers in the past. Spinnakers were purchased in 2023, and they were so happy with their speed and service that jibs were then purchased in 2024. Finally, in 2025, a new Fusion m Carbon main membrane was added, along with an additional spinnaker.
All the sails fitted perfectly. Since launching this year, Something Else has won its first two DBSC races and has finished no worse than second in any race. Then to Scotland and Something Else counted six wins to finish with 6 points overall, discarding two second places. An amazing achievement in very mixed conditions against some top competitors, including two previous winners. Their winning margin was 10 points, with J/109s also finishing second and third overall.
Winning in fleets with similar boat designs, many of which use sails from other well-known sailmakers, shows that Quantum's designs and construction methods are top-class and as good, if not better, than any other. Results from the Top level TP 52 fleet also show that at the very top level, Quantum Sails can win. Last year's TP52 Superseries was won by Quantum Magic, with the TP52 worlds won by Gladiator. Both using Quantum sails.

Mark Mansfield from Quantum Sails Ireland sailed on Something Else in Scotland as main trimmer and tactician and had this to add— "We were always fast in all conditions, both in the light airs of day one and the stronger breezes for the next 3 days. Conditions were tricky with winds off the shore, so sometimes you had a setback, but we were always fast, so that speed helped us to recover when shifts did not go our way."
Brian Hall, Owner and driver of Something Else, commented— "Switching to Quantum Sails has been a game-changer, thanks to the exceptional expertise and guidance from Mark Mansfield and Yannick Lemonnier at the Irish loft. We now find our speed around the race course and height upwind has excelled relative to our competitors, so with good crew teamwork, Quantum is giving us the important edge...."
