RTÉ has commissioned a second series of Tarrac na Farraige, which profiled Ireland’s fishing industry through the eyes of several skippers.
Maggie Breathnach of Red Shoe Productions has said the new season will continue to explore the social aspects of the fishing industry, while also examining major international issues affecting it.
Seamus Hayes will return as head of the camera department, which, Breathnach says, ensures “the same cinematic quality and sensitive storytelling that earned us such high praise the first time round”.
Hayes filmed on board many boats for the first series broadcast earlier this year, including The Foyle Fisher, Menhaden, Little Jack, Cruach na Cara, Jenny M, Rose of Sharon and the Áine.
The four-part first series earned plaudits, with Irish Times television critic Ed Power stating it offered a “remarkable window into a way of life too often overlooked”.
Breathnach said she is looking forward to working with Niall Duffy, editor of The Skipper magazine, and the wider fishing community.
She says her production team is particularly interested in stories from fluent Irish speakers, and they plan to film on boats “big and small” around the coast.
